DOROTHY'S STORY — THE COLORS THAT HEALED HER LIFE
My work in healing color began in college, and quickly escalated when I was assaulted in my studio a decade later.
Where color began
At East Carolina University, I studies the color field theories of Joseph Albers — that color exists in relationship to colors surrounding it. My painting professor, Ed Reep, assigned us a color lesson that took all semester to complete. Paint an array of a single colors; five steps warmer, five steps cooler, along a scale of ten value points. I chose green.
Pastels: Shoot from the Hip
Away from art friends at university, I began working in pastels. I loved having all those gorgeous colors all laid out in front of me. Grab and Express became my method.
My pastel landscapes quickly gained recognition from The Pastel Society of America, the first Virginian elected to prestigeous membership.
But the day after I was assaulted in my studio I could no longer paint the same gentle landscapes.
Instead raging emotions screamed in pastel with screeching angular strokes. Urgency drove me into the next chapter: healing with color.
Seeing Sanctuary & Beyond
By the end of the decade, I'd stopped painting. PTSD was not a thing then. I painted alone, bushwacking my own journey. We moved from Norfolk, and bought a cottage by a woodland pond, footsteps from the Chesapeake Bay. After four years in the darkest places, I found sanctuary painting en plein air on the beach.
I felt like a pupply aligning its heartbeat with its mother, as I mixed colors to match earth sky and water. In a decade, I came into harmony and grew bored with painting sunsets.
On a whim, I applied for a residency in France, where my relationship with the landscape shifted and I developed my New Earth Healing Palette.

What is the difference between color healing and art therapy?
Color healing centers on the colors themselves — their frequency, their chakra resonance, and their capacity to move what has been held still in the body. Art therapy, by contrast, uses art-making as a diagnostic or processing tool within a therapeutic framework, guided by a licensed therapist. Dorothy's work is not clinical. It is creative. The healing happens through direct, intuitive contact with color — through the act of painting itself, without diagnosis, without a particular emotional agenda, and without any requirement that you analyze what emerges. You simply pick up the brush and let the color do what it knows.
Do I need any art experience?

Dorothy Fagan has been following color for fifty years.
She holds a B.F.A. in Printmaking and Painting from East Carolina University, where she studied color theory under Professor Edward Reep and first encountered the radical idea that color is not decoration — it is experience. It is medicine. It is a language the body understands before the mind does.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including The Pastel Society of America's international exhibition in New York. She completed an artist residency at Musée de la Grande Vigne in Dinan, France — where the New Earth Healing Palette™ took its final, clarified form. She is the author of Embrace the Mountain.
For five decades, she has painted the Chesapeake Bay watershed — following the water from the Appalachian highlands where it begins, through the tidal marshes and open water where it arrives. Earth, sky, water. The luminous thin space where they meet. The healing colors that move through the body of anyone who is willing to stop and look.
