What Is Color Healing?
Color healing is the practice of using specific pigments, color sequences, and mindful painting exercises to regulate the nervous system and shift emotional states — using color as a direct tool to move the body from stress into a calm, settled state. Dorothy Fagan, known as The Color Alchemist, has used color this way in her own life for fifty years, developing what she calls the New Earth Healing Palette™: six pigments, each mapped to the body's energy centers (chakra resonance), that work together as the underlying mechanism — the "how" behind the calm people feel when they paint or live with this color practice.
Unlike traditional art therapy, which uses art-making as a diagnostic or processing tool guided by a licensed therapist, color healing centers on the colors themselves — their frequency, their chakra resonance, and their capacity to move e-motion (energy in motion) through the body as the person paints, settling the nervous system in the process. No art background or therapeutic setting is required; the healing happens through direct, intuitive contact with color.
Dorothy teaches color healing through two entry points: the New Earth Healing Palette™ Painting Demonstration, which walks through each of the six pigments and their healing significance, and Splash Scribble™, her signature quick-start method for expressive color painting, taught from her sacred studio on the Chesapeake Bay in Cobbs Creek, Virginia.
“There is so much that remains untapped and awaiting release deep within each of us that it would be lamentable not to investigate these individual worlds of discovery.”
Edward Reep, The Content of Watercolor, 1969
How I Discovered Healing Colors
The Strange Juxtapositions of Color fusion healing
My fascination with color began in the painting studio with Professor Edward Reep. At East Carolina University, Reep presented theories of perception and juxtaposed color fields of Joseph Albers, Interaction of Color, along with his commitment to access 'untapped creative awaiting release deep within each of us.'
The strange juxtaposition of art and science opened color fusion within me to heal trauma and tap into the power of my creative heart.
Ramping Up the Stakes
Our Deepest Gifts Hidden Within Life Itself
A decade after graduating with my B.F.A. in Printmaking and Painting, I was assaulted in my studio. That day, I lost my ability to create the delicate pastel abstract landscapes which were accepted into The Pastel Society of America's International exhibition in New York. Instead, I found the courage to sketch my assailant's face from memory for the detective. I couldn't bear to look at it, and never saw the sketch again. I couldn't remember whether he had facial hair or not, still don't.
What stuck with me is the feeling of urgency -- I still see my hands, untied, locking the door to protect myself. (My sisters called me Dorr.) My assailant was sentenced to life plus 30 years, and I am just now unlocking the door -- to share the gift of light that 30+ years of life opened through my art.
With trauma raging across the world, the urgency to share how color fusion actually unlocks human capacity remains. I've distilled my palette and healing method into inexpensive, mini-lessons that anyone can use to channel colorful healing wavelengths of light.
You don't have to be an artist, or even think of yourself as 'creative' to cultivate your healing heart with the New Earth Healing Palette™, Splash Scribble™, and Embrace the Mountain.
From Muddy to Sparkling Color
Seeking Sanctuary to Flourishing
I sought sanctuary for three decades painting en plein air on protected landscapes around my home. As I sensed a time for change, I found new direction for my art and life with an artist residency at Musee de La Grande Vigne, in Dinan, France.
What colors to take? I can't take them all! (This story continues in my book, Embrace the Mountain, below.) Discovery in France opened beyond sanctuary to a world of flourishing.
The New Earth Healing Palette™
The six pigments that healed my life and art
My painting and life opened with new clarity, resonance, and deep vibrancy as I began using my healing palette. My watercolors sparkled. My oil paintings flowed vibrantly. And my acrylics, which I had only used previously for commercial work, opened me into a new relationship with textile mixed media painting that turned my life right-side up.
Over a decade, I translated the healing pigments throughout my art practice in Sunrise Sunset, The Land of Plenty, and Flourish series paintings. As I aligned my chakra energies with artists' pigments, I began to understand the fusion science of light>particle in tapping human resources beyond the five senses (and being married to a physicist for 16 years, who said 'you think funny!') -- to this New Earth of flourishing co-creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Color Healing
What is color healing art therapy?
Color healing uses specific pigments and mindful painting practice to shift emotional and energetic states. It differs from clinical art therapy in that it's led by the colors and the artist's own intuitive process rather than a therapeutic diagnostic framework — though many people find it deeply healing for processing trauma and emotion.
Through interactive projects like Fagan's Cosmos Series, the artist guides people from seed to blossom in 60 days, cosmos symbolizes inner strength and resilience as late-season bloomers.
Can art help regulate the nervous system?
Yes. Color is one of the most direct sensory tools for shifting the body out of a stressed state and into a calm, settled one. Dorothy Fagan has used color this way in her own studio practice for fifty years, developing the New Earth Healing Palette™ specifically around which colors support that shift and why.
How does color healing work?
Color acts as a direct tool for nervous system regulation — moving the body from stress into a settled, calm state. Each pigment in the New Earth Healing Palette™ corresponds to a chakra energy center in the body, which is the underlying mechanism. Painting with these six colors, using Dorothy Fagan's Splash Scribble™ method, allows e-motion — energy in motion — to move through the body as color.
Do I need art experience to learn color healing painting?
No. Splash Scribble™ and the New Earth Healing Palette™ Demonstration are both designed for complete beginners. The only requirement is a willingness to begin.
What is the New Earth Healing Palette™?
The New Earth Healing Palette™ is Dorothy Fagan's six-pigment color system, developed over a decade of studio practice and refined during an artist residency in France. Each pigment carries a specific chakra resonance and emotional significance.
What is the Splash Scribble™ method?
Splash Scribble™ is Dorothy Fagan's signature quick-start method for expressive healing color painting — one week of short, guided painting and journaling exercises that work in watercolor, acrylic, or oil.
Can color healing work in any painting medium?
Yes. Both the New Earth Healing Palette™ and Splash Scribble™ are designed to translate across watercolor, acrylic, and oil.
Where does Dorothy Fagan teach color healing?
Dorothy teaches online through self-paced mini-lessons and video demonstrations, developed from her studio on the Piankatank River in Cobbs Creek, Virginia, on the Chesapeake Bay.
