Acrylic paints are the bridge between watercolors and heavy impasto, mixed-media work. Mixed with gels and textured mediums, you can paint, draw, and collage in a single artwork.
My Flourish series is a great example of this fusion. Some works began on handmade papers, then collaged onto canvas. Others began with emotional colors, then drawn over with willow charcoal.

The Palette
I use acrylics for many reasons — they can be used transparently like watercolor, or thick like oils. Unlike watercolor, they don't clean up once dry (good if you want to paint back over them, less good for spills — you'll need a special cleaning solution, included below). I've listed the tube colors, a gel medium for thicker application, and a retarding medium to slow drying. Works beautifully on paper, canvas, fabric, or wood.
