During my French artist residency, I began using willow charcoal to draw back into wet oil washes — an outgrowth from watercolor, allowing many layers of wash and drawing to fuse. Returning from France, I painted in the healing colors of Provence.

The Palette

The Palette: I use oils for plein air painting or larger studio canvases. Oils have a deeper color resonance I haven't found in any other medium — professional colors carry the heaviest pigment load, essential for developing color resonance in body, heart, and spirit. I highly recommend Gamblin colors, made in the USA. Basic palette: 2 reds (Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Lt), 2 blues (Ultramarine, Manganese), 2 yellows (Lemon Yellow, Indian Yellow). Also included: a paper palette, medium sampler, and canvas pads for quick sketches.
